Signs Of Beneficial Knowledge
Shaikh Bakr Abu Zaid said in his book Hilyah Taalib Ul ‘Ilm:

“Ask yourself about your portion of the signs of beneficial knowledge. And they are:

1. Action upon it

2. Disliking praise and appraisals, and being arrogant over the creation.

Note: Shaikh ‘Uthaimeen said: And this is what some have been tested with…
3. Having much humility when you increase in knowledge.

1. Running away from loving leadership, fame and the Dunya.

2. Staying away from claiming knowledge.

3. Thinking bad of yourself and thinking good of the people thereby keeping oneself away from speaking ill about them.

Will you not then take heed? (11:24)
He will say: "O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)?” (Allâh) will say: "Like this: Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected (in the Hell-fire, away from Allâh’s Mercy)." How does someone validate or correct their intention for seeking knowledge?
Umar bin Al-Khattab—may Allah be pleased with him—said: I heard Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) saying: “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions” [al-Bukhari and Muslim].

The Student of Knowledge should have the intention to seek Knowledge for Allah’s sake. The intention is to lift ignorance from yourself and then from others.

Imam Ibn Jamaa’ah—may Allah have mercy upon him—said: “A good intention in seeking Knowledge is: to intend by it the Face of Allah, the Exalted, knowledge of Him, to revive the Legislation, illuminate their heart, adorning his inner self, drawing near to Allah, Exalted on the Day of Judgement, and to expose himself to what the People of Knowledge have been promised from the pleasure of Allah and His great bounty . . .” [Tadhkirah as-Saami’ wal-Mutakallim (pg. 104)]

The intention for knowledge should not be for worldly benefits or fame or otherwise. Imam al-Fayroozabaadi (d. 817 H.)—may Allah have mercy upon him—said: “Many of those who look into Knowledge for a worldly purpose did not obtain that knowledge nor their purpose” [Basaa’ir Dhawi at-Tamyeez (1/38)].

This shows how have wrong intention in seeking knowledge is a cause for being deprived from obtaining knowledge and the pleasure of Allah.

Imam Ibn al-Jawzi—may Allah have mercy upon him—wrote: "I noticed that most of the scholars are busy with the outer image of knowledge; the concern of the jurist is to teach people and the concern of the exhorter is to preach to people. The former dedicates all his efforts to conduct his classes and rejoices when seeing plenty of people attending his lectures; he trivializes the views of his opponents and spends all his time thinking of matters of dispute in order to defeat his opponents. He aspires to be looked up to, glorified among people and he even may endeavour to collect wealth and mingle with rulers. The latter endeavours to ensure his words are articulated beautifully whereby he can attract more audience and provoke people to glorify him; hence he rebukes and defames his peers [as he wants all the attention for himself]" [Saydul-Khaatir (Captured Thoughts)(pg. 885) Darus-Sunnah Translation]
