Public holiday, PTO, Day off, Weekend - What’s the difference?

Today, the Catholic Church is celebrating Good Friday, therefore here in Portugal it’s a public holiday.

A Public Holiday is a national or a legal holiday and it is recognised by the government. Christmas Day, New Years day, Easter, Religious or Historical events - are all Public Holidays.

❗️Many students often think that Saturday and Sunday are holidays. This is wrong.
Saturday and Sunday is a weekend. Typically, on weekends, we don’t work.
Today (Good Friday) is a Public Holiday, but because it falls on a Friday we can say that we have long weekend.

Because of the longer weekend this week, many employees decided to take a PTO.
PTO stands for “Paid Time Off”. In the above context, many employees decided to take vacation days and relax.

PTO can also include sick leave (paid time off work due to illness) or paid time off due to personal reasons.

What if you’ve used all your PTO and you need additional time off work?
Then you can take an Unpaid Leave.
