lecture about ashura and tasua
Ashura is one of the events attracted the most attention of Muslims throughout the history, that in addition to its extensive role and profound social and historical impact, it has become a special cultural event now.
The month of Muharram is the first Islamic month of the Islamic calender, one of the forbidden months of Muslims, in which the greatest tragedy and oppression in the Prophet’s family occurred in the history of the Muslim world.
The popularity of this day among Muslims is driven from the event of Ashura in the 61 AH, in view of the fact that the major events of Karbala occurred on the ninth and tenth day of the month of Muharram al-Haram;
Ashura coincides with the date on which the Battle of Karbala took place, resulting in the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and a member of the Household of Muhammad (Ahl al-Bayt)
During these days, Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of the Shias and seventy-two persons of his followers were martyred with a thirsty lip in the war with a the forces of Yazid in the event of Karbala.
Other surviving members of Imam Hussein’s family or followers (including women, children and elderly people) were taken captive.
Lone surviving 22 yr old ailing son of Hussain (a.s) Zain-ul- Abidin (a.s) and all the women were taken into custody by evil king Yazid’s army men.
Amongst those women who survived were Rubab (a.s) wife of Imam Husain (a.s) and his sister Lady Zainab (a.s) whose 2 sons Aun and Mohammad too were killed.
They were martyred in the name of justice and freedom, that’s why Imam Hussein is a symbol of resistance against tyranny.
This mourning is not a normal one, and is the greatest mourning happening in this month.
After the Ashura, the mourning continues at different times even until the Safar month.
In Iran, for the first ten days of the month believers march in the city with the rhythm of drums and religious songs and participate in mourning ceremonies and ritual chest-beating.
Many of pious adherents begin mourning from the first night of Muharram and continue for ten nights, climaxing on Tasua and Ashura.
This general mourning begins by wearing the black clothes and blackening the streets, mosques, Husayniyah, etc., by mourning’s flags.
On this day Shia is in remembrance, and mourning attire is worn.
we refrain from listening to or playing music since culture generally considers music impolite during death rituals.
Shia Muslims do not plan weddings and parties on this date.
we mourn by crying and listening to recollections of the tragedy and sermons on how Husayn and his family were martyred.
This is intended to connect us with Husayn’s suffering and martyrdom, and the sacrifices he made to keep Islam alive.
Husayn’s martyrdom is widely interpreted by Shia Muslims as a symbol of the struggle against injustice, tyranny, and oppression.
Shia Muslims believe the Battle of Karbala was between the forces of good and evil, with Husayn representing good and Yazid representing evil.
As was discussed above, according to the majority of scholars, Imam al-Mahdi (a) was born on the 15th of Sha'ban, and, hence, this day has become one of the most important Shiite festivals. Celebrations, illuminations throughout the cities and towns, and distribution…
Bihar al-anwar (volumes 51, 52, and 53) Muntakhab al-athar There are many Shiite hadiths about the place and significance of Imam al-Mahdi (a). These hadiths are concerned with the character of Imam al-Mahdi (a), the character of people who expect him, the…
The signs of the time when the Imam (a) reappears can be found in hadiths and in the Qur'an as interpreted by the traditions. Based on these sources, when the time of the reappearance approaches, three major phenomena will be seen in the world: Widespread…
Several hadiths predicted the birth and occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (a), before his birth. Many hadiths also speak about his rule. According to these hadiths, he is the Imam who will rise by God's command and establish a universal rule. Before his uprising…
divine verification. Ibn Abi Ghanim al-Qazwini and a group of the Shi'as disagreed about the successor of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari (a). Ibn Abi Ghanim said: "Abu Muhammad (a) has passed away and has no successor." The Shi'as wrote a letter in this regard and…
According to Shi'i hadiths, the beginning of the imamate of Imam al-Mahdi (a) was when he was five. God bestowed upon him the qualifications needed for imamate at that young age, just as Yahya (a) was given wisdom in his childhood, and Jesus (a) was chosen…
