Zambia cybercrime case sees 22 Chinese jailed
A Zambian court sentenced members of a Chinese cybercrime gang to jail terms up to 11 years, along with fines between $1,500-3,000 each, as part of a massive operation that saw 77 individuals arrested in April.
A number of Zambian nationals recruited to run scam operations via WhatsApp, Telegram and chatrooms for the Chinese firm were among the initial group arrested, but they were released on bail on condition they helped authorities with their investigations.
The online fraud scheme had targeted people across the globe, including Singapore, Peru, and the UAE.
NEW: Damning new report found that the COVID-19 virus most likely leaked from a Chinese lab — and that the US bears responsibility for pumping tens of millions of dollars into high-risk research on extremely infectious viruses at a facility with weak safety protocols — The analysis by Alina Chan, a Harvard and MIT molecular biologist, was published as a New York Times guest essay,
Russia and China Transition to USDT
According to Bloomberg analysts, major companies in the metallurgical sector are using cryptocurrencies, including USDT, for transactions. This approach helps China avoid secondary sanctions and allows Russia to obtain easily convertible assets that are essentially equivalent to dollars.
However, this news seems more like another reason for sanctions "somewhere over there"—over 90% of Russia-China trade is conducted in national currencies. It appears that private entities have started using USDT, which does not violate any sanctions. This development is inconvenient for those who have already imposed billions in other sanctions. Pressure on Tether is expected, but it is unclear what actions can be taken, given the decentralized nature of the platforms involved.

China Imposes Sanctions on 12 US Companies
China has decided to impose sanctions on 12 American companies due to the US supplying arms to Taiwan and in response to the restrictions placed on Chinese companies for their cooperation with Russian partners. The top executives of the sanctioned corporations are now banned from entering China, and their guest status and residence applications will be revoked. The sanctions primarily target representatives of the US defense sector, which continues to supply weapons to a rebellious province of China.
