Material matters?

? Science & exploration

Bacterial contamination is a thing.

Microorganisms create protective slime clusters known as biofilms, even in places like the International Space Station.
To develop surfaces that can reduce bacterial contamination, experiments are being conducted to understand how gravity affects the biofilms.?

? This would benefit astronauts and people on Earth alike.

Shadow hunters capture Didymos asteroid eclipsing stars ?*?* Enabling & Support

Astronomers have succeeded in capturing the momentary shadow cast by the Didymos asteroid. ?
An event that has required a lot of effort in placing observers in the right spots and knowledge to calculate and predict positions and trajectories with extreme precision. ?
Stellar occultations are an extraordinary tool to obtain information on shapes and positions of Solar System objects.?

Logistic efforts have been unsuccessful for several weeks, such as in the case of the 45 observers deployed in Portugal, Spain and Algeria on 25 August, but prevented from observing by adverse meteorological conditions...?

***?*** **Look at this image of …

? Look at this image of the Sun. It is shown in unprecedented detail thanks to Solar Orbiter, the most complex scientific laboratory ever to have been sent to the Sun.

? Science & Exploration

The image has a resolution that is ten times better than what a 4K TV screen can display.?
Solar Orbiter was at a distance of roughly 75 million kilometres at the time it took the pictures. ☀️↔️?

Such a high spatial resolution at that close distance requires a mosaic of 25 individual images to cover the entire Sun. Taken one after the other, the full image was captured over a period of more than four hours because each tile takes about 10 minutes, including the time for the spacecraft to point from one segment to the next. ?

Working towards a Digital Twin of Earth ?*?*

? ApplicationDigital Twin Earth (DTE) is an interactive digital replica of our planet, based on the combination of Earth observation data, in situ measurements and artificial intelligence. The model will help visualise and forecast natural and human activity on the planet. ?**

It’s important to work on this project, since in the coming decades population growth and human activities are expected to amplify the current pressures on critical resources, intensify the stress on our ecosystems and increase environmental pollution and its impacts on health and biodiversity.

DTE will be able to monitor the health of the planet, perform simulations of Earth’s interconnected system with human behaviour, and help support European environmental policies.

Space Debris ?****

? Safety & Security

? On 20 April 2021,ESA will host the 8th European Conference on Space Debris from Darmstadt, in Germany, where the latest issues surrounding space debris will be discussed. ?

? Watch the video

There are currently over 129 million objects larger than a millimetre in orbits around Earth.
Anything travelling up to 56 000 km/h in an orbit is dangerous if it comes into contact with the many satellites that connect us around the world. ?

Hence at the end of 2019 ESA has commissioned ClearSpace-1 - the world’s first mission to remove space debris.
