It accepts the real existence of gods and spirits but it doesn’t treat them any differently to humans or animals—they have their own desires, they can be wrong or lie to you. They can be helpful or harmful so you can’t trust them just like you wouldn’t trust anyone else.

Similarly, the Buddha told his followers not to blindly trust him. It’s so important to prove all the teachings logically. If your understanding of a teaching contains logical contradictions, then you haven’t understood it properly. When you attempt to meditate upon it, you’ll be meditating on something else and you won’t get the desired result!

Just because you can’t see gods or spirits doesn’t mean they aren’t real. Even the Dalai Lama was initially sceptical of the Nechung Oracle, who communicates with Dorje Drakden, the main protector deity of Tibet, but he now considers Dorje Drakden a close friend. Dorje Drakden also gave him detailed instructions which helped him escape Tibet.

Buddhists do believe that gods and spirits are real but they never rely on them. However, they may propitiate them and ask them for assistance with their practice just as they might ask anyone else. I find this all quite reasonable.

I would then teach harrison how to do basic vispassana and samantha meditation.

I would ask him to please record himself doing vispasaana and samantha, so that mueller knows, that he cannot be a victim anymore. And that the attacks will not work against him.

I would then offer him five hundred dollars, to go to a thai meditation center, to train in these defenses.

I would have this center picked out, and I would talk to the abbott of that monastary, and make arrangements for Harrison to stay for a month.
