India’s T20 World Cup Victory & Chokers’ tag: Making sense with Bhagavad-gita

India’s victory in the T20 World Cup has brought celebration and also relief that India has shed the choker’s tag. From the Bhagavad Gita’s perspective, there is no such thing as chokers; as being some kind of invisible, malefic influence existing over people. The Gita in 18.14 explains that three broad sets of factors affect the translation of actions into results. Physical in terms of the venue, adhishthanam, and the karanam, the skills of the senses. Then psychological in terms of the endeavour, the cheshta that is made. And philosophical in terms of daiva, the destiny. So sometimes when results don’t come, rather than reducing the cause to just one simplistic label, be it blaming the pitch or blaming the players’ skills or blaming their mental strength, We need to get the whole picture and help people perform better.

Protecting our spirit to help

Just because we can’t help everyone doesn’t mean that we should help no one. Helpfulness is always a virtue; It is just helpfulness without thoughtfulness that becomes a problem. Sometimes when we try to help others and that other person does not respond positively. That person continues to spiral down a negative path. We may start becoming disheartened and think, I can’t help everyone. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t help anyone. We need to still try to help, and we just need to become more intelligent in evaluating who is receiving our help more gratefully and positively – and investing our efforts in those people.

Bringing out the best part of ourselves

Self-control is not necessarily suppression of the self, it is selection of what is worthy within the self. When some people are told to discipline themselves and not just give unfiltered vent to whatever emotions are there inside them; then they may respond by saying you are suppressing me. While that could sometimes be happening, it is also possible that they are mistaking suppression to be selection. We all have feelings within us that are not just inappropriate but are also unworthy. And the nature has given us the mechanism to keep those feelings within us and it is important for us to select the best part of us and bring it out, not the worst part.

Playing it safe with silence

Speaking what everyone is thinking but no one is speaking doesn’t always make us fearless. It can make us headless and mannerless. When something inappropriate is happening and no one is pointing out its inappropriateness; we may think that if we point it out we are being bold and fearless. That’s one possibility: but it’s also another possibility; maybe it is best to not aggravate the situation by pointing out the obvious. And if that were the case then our speaking will be headless; it would make things worse and it would reflect us as someone who has no manners and no courtesy. That’s why it is better to be safe than to be sorry.

Verbal restraint and verbal candour

If we sweep too many things under the rug, then what we end up with is not a rug but a lumpy path that only makes us trip and hurt ourselves more. Sometimes we all tend to sweep unpleasant realities under the rug. While that is sometimes necessary from a functional perspective, if that’s what we are doing repeatedly, then the amount of things under the rug will soon become so many that not only we but others will also start tripping and falling and injuring themselves. That’s why while there is a time when to express verbal restraint, there also needs to be a time when there can be verbal candour whereby issues can be addressed and not just swept under the rug.

Be managers, not damagers

Just because we can’t manage doesn’t mean we have to damage. Sometimes things go out of our control and especially if we are supposed to be in charge, then the things going out of control can be overwhelming. If we take this turn of events as a personal loss, then we start reacting from a place of insecurity. And then that overreaction can end up making us do things that are damaging. If instead, we just take a pause, take a deep breath, and then pray for the intelligence to best deal with the situation, then we can ensure that we won’t be damagers; we can be managers, even if not in the way we would have liked to manage things.

The danger of absolute relativism

If the meaning of words can be redefined arbitrarily so that anything can mean anything, then nothing will mean anything. We live in a world where we try to resolve its complexity by identifying objects and using words to refer to those objects. The bond between words and their meanings is what helps us to navigate the world’s complexity. Of course, this bond is not always perfect: the same word can mean many different things, and the same object can be referred to by different words. But that nuance does not mean that there’s an absolute relativism where any word can mean anything. That will lead to complexity becoming unmanageable – and chaos and disorder and disaster befalling us in our inner and outer worlds.

Why some people can’t manage change

Just because things don’t work the way they worked in the past does not mean that the world has come to an end; it just means that we need to find a new way to make things work in the world as it exists presently. Some people are not just followers of tradition but they sometimes become so absolutely beholden to tradition that when one thing doesn’t work the way it worked in the past, they think that it is the end of the world. However, the reality is that the world keeps changing, and we humans have been given the intelligence to find ways to make things work – even if the way things will work today is different from the way they worked in the past.

Does urgency steal our manners?

Just because we do not have a minute to lose does not mean that we have to lose our manners; we can be both polite and competent. Sometimes when we have to do something very urgent and when sometimes someone else does not get the urgency of things, we may tend to dismiss them. While our urgency is definitely good, our dismissiveness towards others is not. Just because we do not have a minute to lose does not mean we have to lose our manners; we can be polite and yet firm. That is why the Bhagavad Gita urges us in 17.15 to speak in a way that is both sensible and sensitive.

Surprise gifts: Delighted or disoriented?

Surprise gifts: Delighted or disoriented? When a surprise is truly surprising, appreciate the fact that it is surprising, not the fact that it is disorienting. Whenever someone says that they have a surprise for us, quite often our mind starts guessing what that surprise might be. And when it turns out to be unexpected, that can be pleasant. But sometimes the unexpected may be so unexpected that we become disoriented. And that may lead us to react in ways that can disappoint and hurt the person who arranged the surprise for us. The strength of our character is seen in maintaining our manners – and being polite and appreciative when somebody has done something for us, even if it is not exactly the way we would have wanted it to be.
