Once there was an island where all the feelings lived together. One day there was a storm in the sea and the island was about to drown. Every feeling was scared but Love made a boat to escape. All the feelings jumped in the boat except for one. Love got down to see who it was, it was Ego! Love tried and tried but Ego didn't move. All the other feelings asked Love to leave Ego and come back to the boat but Love was meant to Love, it remained with Ego.

All other feelings remained alive but Love died. Because of EGO.

I think if ego is strong enough to kill love, it's strong enough to survive! So ego survives and reaches the shore, sits there for a while and ponders about what happened. If it realizes that love died because of it and accepts that it was it's fault ( which is very tough for it to do) then it tries not to let the same thing happen in it's future relationships. If it doesn't realize that it was it's mistake, the saga continues and in the process it will hurt others and itself. After all, ego is self destructive too!

So why do we have an Ego? Does it have a purpose ?

Ego has a big and beautiful purpose in our life. It is said that the purpose of ego is to cause you great levels of unhappiness and suffering so that hopefully one day after trying to change the world and people around you, you can look inside and decide to change yourself.

But what is ego then? the best definition I have found so far is: System of beliefs and limitations that prevents the ability to love. Ego is the idea you have of yourself, your systems of beliefs, culture and everything that makes you who you are. However, you didn't come to this world with an ego, you created it in this world. When you where a baby and a little child you where in a state of innocence, but innocence gets contaminated with everything that culture sold you and you took for granted as truth, because as you were in state of innocence you didn't have any prior information to confront those ideas or beliefs. That is why we as kids accepted almost everything without questioning it. The thing with ego is that it gets every time more structured with what you studied, with the views you have of the world, with everything you learn and hear. Ego creates a mold of yourself and every passing years it gets more and more solid, just like a rock. Ego then is what doesn't let you enjoy life, is what tells you that life and people should be in a specific way and that reality is wrong, is that urge you feel to impose your beliefs, to have the reason, to be the first and is what divides the world in good and bad. Ego is why you suffer.

The thing is that you have an ego but you are not your ego, you created it, but you are too much identified with your ego. What is the purpose of ego then? it lets you verify that the world and people are not like you think or belief they should be and that trying to change them brings you only pain, unhappiness and suffering and all of this because your ego= beliefs, judgements and prejudices. When you start to clean your ego of that, you start changing your system of beliefs into a new information, an information of truth, understanding and love. How do you know is an information of truth? because of the results you have in your life, which are positive results, better relations, acceptance, adaptability, better health. These are positive indicators, you can´t fool yourself with them.

Ego brings you then from the state of innocence into purity, and that purity can never be polluted again.

But as you do, keep track of the effects. Try keeping a log or journal of your experiences, noting any challenges, successes or insights that you gain along the way. By conducting these experiments, you give yourself the opportunity to explore an alternative path – without having to commit to it in the long term. Not yet, anyway.

These little experiments involve recognising that the journey to alignment is not one with a clear end-goal. It’s a never-ending process. As we navigate the laboratory of our lives, we must be willing to embrace experimentation – and to learn as we go.

To experiment with what brings you meaning. And use those experiments to inform the decisions you make every hour.

‘Alignment experiments’ can help you test theories about what might bring you closer to alignment in your day-to-day decision making.

It’s a process with three stages.

» First, identify an area of your life where your actions feel particularly unfulfilling.
- Think about it – is there anywhere you feel things aren’t going well?

» Second, come up with your hypothesis.
- That means adopting an experimental mindset.
- The one thing you change to see what effect it could have.
- If you were to change one – just one – independent variable in your life, what would it be? And what effect do you think it would have on your situation?

» Step three is the most crucial: execute.
- Make a change. And as you do so, see what effect it has on your situation – and your sense of alignment.
- For this to work as an experiment, it’s important that your change is localised.
- If you dramatically transform every sphere of your life, you won’t know what’s driving any changes in your mood and sense of alignment.
- So to start with, keep it small.

To integrate long-term values into day-to-day decisions draws upon a simple fact: short-term targets feel much easier to reach than long-term ones.

It helps overcome the distance between where we are now and where we want to be.

Each morning, simply choose three actions for the day ahead that will move you a tiny step closer to where you want to be in a year’s time.

Under each of the areas of health, work and relationships.

Three alignment quests for the day could look like:

H – Go for a 30-minute run after class
W – Spend an extra hour studying for tomorrow’s exam
R – Catch up with Katherine over coffee after study session

H – Take a 15-minute walk during my lunch break
W – Complete the project proposal draft by lunchtime
R – Cook a healthy dinner for the family and spend quality time together

By focusing on the immediate, short-term steps – rather than on the whole year ahead – you turn living your values into something immediate. And achievable.
