About a month ago, some members of the ED mod team began sharing concerns about a particular member's seemingly disingenuous behavior. We have since learned that their behavior & it’s impact has gone beyond the scope of our immediate group members, affecting multiple people that reached out for assistance from ED.
We've removed the person in question from the group. We're asking anyone else who was harmed to tell us and give us the opportunity to rectify whatever we can.
We're reflecting on our responsibilities and how we could have prevented or reduced the harm caused. Eviction defense is community defense - it can't be allowed to occur through coercion or manipulation, or for the personal gain of those involved. If you witness anyone in this community exploiting their neighbors, that's something we want to address asap. We protect us.
Tenant would like folks to show up on Monday (tomorrow 5/9) at 2040 S. 18th street, by 11 am. She is a 19 year old disabled, black, non-binary person. Landlord is attempting to evict her immediately without proper notice, mediation, writ of possession, or due process of any kind, on the grounds that the tenant has been "disruptive" (meaning she's been noisy, due to her disability, and her downstairs neighbors have complained.)
This attempt to illegally evict her is also a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act
3 tenants of 4617 Chester Ave (Apartment 1) are withholding rent & want to make their community aware of their menacing landlord, Nasmzada Nachman. He has a years-long history of harassing tenants across multiple properties, terrorizing the neighborhood, & leaving dangerous maintenance issues unattended to. He bears no rental license on the property.
Specific harassment on their unit has been ongoing for months but escalated in the last week. Nachman is relentlessly sexist and goes out of his way to physically intimidate, shove, and scream at these tenants.
On 4/26, Nachman arrived at their building unannounced, broke into the utilities room, and called the police when he was notified that his presence was not welcome. Despite being informed by the very cops he called himself that he would need to file for eviction in housing court and could not change locks, he continued to “work” in their utilities room, completely cutting off their hot water, gas, & electricity to some rooms, as well as changing the lock to the utilities room that leads into their apartment.
On 4/28, Nachman spotted a friend of the household on the opposite side of street from the property, ran up on them from behind, punched them repeatedly in the head, and shoved them onto a low metal fence while screaming homophobic slurs. Their friend sustained scrapes and bruising from the fence and bumps on head. He continued to menace outside of the property throughout the day.
The residents of apartment 1 are now 5 days without essential utilities, have filed a cease and desist with the fair housing commission, and are requesting support from the community. Be aware that Nachman is known to post up on Chester Ave between 46th and 47th and has been bringing a variety of maintenance workers to putter around and maintain an excuse to be on the property. More updates on the situation & requests of these tenants are to come.
