‘‘…previously I worked in the waving department. Upon the initiation of my employer, I am currently transferred to a position of a mechanic in the same undertaking. Although I perform equal work with men, my salary is way below the average salary paid to men employed in the same position. my repeated appeal to the top management to correct the misdeed has not been responded positively’’
This was testimony given by a gender based discrimination victim who faced a violation to her pay related rights.
The FDRE Constitution, under Article 25, aspires to ensure the full respect of fundamental rights and freedoms without any discrimination based on sex, religion, ethnic background, or other status. Sub-article 8 of Article 25 states women's right to equality in employment, promotion, pay, and transfer of pension entitlement.
Labor Proclamation No. 1156/2017, Article 14(b), prohibits discrimination against female workers in matters of remuneration on the grounds of their sex.
Ethiopia has signed the ILO's Equal Remuneration Convention, 1951 (No. 100), on 24 March 1999.

According to Ethiopian legislation and international …

According to Ethiopian legislation and international instruments, the rights of employees to equality in recruitment and promotion are recognized. Recent research conducted by AHRE assessed the existence of discrimination in employment and promotion in the workplace. The research found that 44.7% of respondents provided a negative response when asked about the effective enforcement of laws governing non-discrimination in employment and promotion, the neutrality of the recruitment process, the existence or absence of discriminatory practices in employment and promotion, and whether workers were ever solicited to provide gifts in cash or kind to secure recruitment or promotion. This indicates that the employment and promotion rights of workers are not being properly respected.

What does the law say about socio-economic and moral damage on expropriation?
For countries like Ethiopia, land is the primary socio-economic, political, and cultural asset. The expropriation of land disrupts the day-to-day lives of individuals, creating inconveniences in social aspects such as separation from neighbors and adapting to a new environment, as well as transportation inconveniences when it comes to commuting to school or work. Moreover, it can result in psychological distress. Additionally, economic factors come into play, including the loss of subsistence and the interruption of economic activities.
Governments should take responsibility, develop dedicated plans to address the socio-economic effects on people that will be displaced, monitor social impacts of projects, assess the relocation area livelihood.
Expropriation and Valuation, Compensation, and Resettlement Council of Ministers Regulation No. 472/2020, Article 30, articulates the provision of psychological support, if needed, and the payment of a lump sum compensation in the range of 25,000 to 60,000 for severed social relations and moral damage to displaced individuals who are relocated 5 kilometers or further from their original place.

FGM is a procedure where the female genital organs are injured or changed and there is no medical reason for this.
In Ethiopia, 25 million girls and women have undergone FGM, the largest absolute number in Eastern and Southern Africa. Overall, 65 per cent of girls and women aged 15 to 49 years have been subjected to FGM. Among adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 years, 47 per cent have undergone the practice. The Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has also enacted laws and made national commitments to address systemic gender issues, such as the 2020- 2024 National Costed Plan to End Child Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Ethiopia has signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) which has Article 24 of the CRC prohibits all forms of violence against children, including FGM and The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Article 2 of CEDAW prohibits discrimination against women in all areas of life, including the right to health. The FDRE constitution, Article 16 protects all citizens against ‘bodily harm’. Article 35(4) asserting, ‘The State shall enforce the right of women to eliminate the influences of harmful customs. Laws, customs and practices that oppress or cause bodily or mental harm to women are prohibited.’ Articles 561–570 of Chapter III of the Criminal Code deal with ‘Crimes Committed Against Life, Person and Health through Harmful Traditional Practices’. They criminalize the performance and procurement of FGM.
We Demand from government
- As the constitution is the supreme law of the land, The government has the responsibility of making sure there is no law, customary practice or decision of an organ of state or the public official which contravenes.
- The sentence on these harmful practices should be punishments that will be a lesson for others.

Ethiopia’s position in the Media Freedom …

Ethiopia’s position in the Media Freedom Index, published every year by the Reporters Without Borders, jumped 40 positions from 150th to 110th in 2019. The progress was credited to the release of jailed journalists and the lifting of bans on media outlets by the incoming administration. However, in 2023, Ethiopia’s position in the index dropped to 130th out 180 countries signifying the regression in the state of Media Freedom and protection of journalists. #MediaFreedom #Post2018
