In the 19th century, one of the most deadly diseases was tuberculosis. They didn't really know how to treat it, it was all about suppressing the symptoms, especially the cough. Doctors and chemists worked to create an effective cough medicine, and in 1874 the substance diacetylmorphine was synthesized, which not only coped with the cough, but also improved the patients' mood. In 1898, the pharmaceutical company Bayer AG began selling it under the name "heroin". Cough syrups containing heroin were sold in pharmacies in Europe and the United States. This is a rather curious fact that the pharmaceutical giant Bayer does not announce today.
