Retail sales in the US stalled in June from May 2024, following an upwardly revised 0.3% rise in the previous period.

Sales at gasoline stations were down 3% and those for autos declined 2.3%. Sales were also lower at sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores (-0.1%). In contrast, sales increased at nonstore retailers (1.9%), building materials and garden equipment (1.4%), health and personal care stores (0.9%), , clothing (0.6%), furniture (0.6%), electronics and appliances (0.4%), general merchandise stores (0.4%), miscellaneous store retailers (0.3%), food services and drinking places (0.3%), and food and beverages stores (0.1%). Excluding gasoline, sales rose 0.2%, following a 0.5% increase in May. Meanwhile, sales excluding food services, auto dealers, building materials stores and gasoline stations, which are used to calculate GDP, were up 0.9%, the largest increase since April 2023, following a 0.4% rise.

Russia could downgrade its diplomatic relationship with the U.S. if Washington moves to confiscate its frozen assets, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday.

The U.S. and Western allies including the European Union have been considering using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine and have been debating how and if this would be possible.

“We are now studying the optimal form of reaction, where among the countermeasures there are also actions against the assets of our Western opponents and where there are diplomatic measures of response,” Ryabkov said, according to a Google-translation of quotes published by state news agency RIA Novosti.

“Lowering the level of diplomatic relations is one of the options,” he added.
