Allah says in surah al-Nisa':

[إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِي الدَّرْكِ الْأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ وَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُمْ نَصِيرًا]

The munafiqoon will be in the lowest level of the hellfire and you will never find a helper for them. [145]

al-Biqa'i highlighted the relationship between their deeds and their status by writing:

[الدرك الأسفل من النار ؛ لأن ذلك أخفى ما في النار؛ وأستره؛ وأدناه؛ وأوضعه؛ كما أن كفرهم أخفى الكفر وأدناه؛ وهو أيضا أخبث طبقات النار؛ كما أن كفرهم أخبث أنواع الكفر]

"The lowest level of the hellfire" - because that is most concealed, covered, distant and lowest part of the hellfire, just as their disbelief is the most concealed and lowest. And that is also the worst level of the hellfire, just as their disbelief is the worst form of kufr.

[Natham al-Durar 5/444]

In one of his writings, ibn Taymiyah wrote:

[التوراة لم تكن جميعها محفوظة لعموم بني إسرائيل كما يحفظ القرآن عامة المسلمين ، وعند خراب بيت المقدس قل من يحفظها جدا ]

The Tawrah was not entirely preserved for all of the Banu Israa'eel in the same way that the Muslims preserved the Qur'an. When Jerusalem was sacked, there were very few who had memorized the Tawrah.

Allah says in surah al-Shu'ara' [26]:

[وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ]

And place your reliance on al-'Aziz al-Rahim [217]

In his tafsir of this ayah, al-Qurtubi wrote:

[قوله تعالى : وتوكل على العزيز الرحيم أي فوض أمرك إليه فإنه العزيز الذي لا يغالب ، الرحيم الذي لا يخذل أولياءه]

Meaning: Entrust your affairs to Him, for He is al-'Aziz who cannot be defeated, al-Rahim who does not let His allies down.

[Jaami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an 13/134]

In his famous book of history, Ibn Kathir recorded that:

[وقال ابن أبي شيبة: حدثنا المحاربي عن ليث عن طاوس قال: ألا رجل يقوم بعشر آيات من الليل فيصبح قد كتب له مائة حسنة أو أكثر من ذلك، ومن زاد زيد في ثوبه]

Tawus said: Listen, if a man stands in prayer during the night and recites just ten ayaat, when he wakes up already 100 hasanat or even more have been written for him as a result of that. And if someone does more, his reward will be more.

[al-Bidayah w'al-Nihayah 9/269]

In his tafsir of surah al-Nisa', Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari included the following narration:

[حدثنا ابن وكيع قال : حدثنا جرير ، عن الأعمش ، عن ذر ، عن يسيع الحضرمي قال : كنت عند علي بن أبي طالب رضوان الله عليه ، فقال رجل : يا أمير المؤمنين ، أرأيت قول الله : " ولن يجعل الله للكافرين على المؤمنين سبيلا " ، وهم يقاتلوننا فيظهرون ويقتلون ؟ قال له علي : ادنه ، ادنه! ثم قال : " فالله يحكم بينكم يوم القيامة ولن يجعل الله للكافرين على المؤمنين سبيلا " ، يوم القيامة . ]

Yusay' al-Hadhrami said: Once when we were with 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, a man said, "O Leader of the Faithful, what do you think about Allah's statement:

[وَلَن يَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ لِلْكَافِرِينَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ سَبِيلًا]

"And Allah will never give the disbelievers a way over the believers" [al-Nisa' ayah 141]

and yet they fight us, defeating and killing us?"

'Ali replied, "Look before that, look before that!" and then recited:

[اللَّهُ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۗ وَلَن يَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ لِلْكَافِرِينَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ سَبِيلًا]

"Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will never give the disbelievers a way over the believers" [al-Nisa' ayah 141]

i.e. on the Day of Resurrection.

[Tafsir al-Tabari 9/328]

Allah says in surah Ghafir [40]:

[وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ]

And your Lord said: Call on Me, I will answer you. [60]

In his commentary on this ayah, al-Tabari wrote:

[ حدثني علي قال : ثنا عبد الله قال : ثني معاوية ، عن علي ، عن ابن عباس قوله : ( ادعوني أستجب لكم ) يقول : وحدوني أغفر لكم . ]

Ibn 'Abbaas explained "call on Me, I will answer you" by saying, "Single Me out for worship, I will forgive you."

[Tafsir al-Tabari 21/406]

Allah says in surah al-Nisa':

[سَتَجِدُونَ آخَرِينَ يُرِيدُونَ أَن يَأْمَنُوكُمْ وَيَأْمَنُوا قَوْمَهُمْ كُلَّ مَا رُدُّوا إِلَى الْفِتْنَةِ أُرْكِسُوا فِيهَا ۚ فَإِن لَّمْ يَعْتَزِلُوكُمْ وَيُلْقُوا إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَمَ وَيَكُفُّوا أَيْدِيَهُمْ فَخُذُوهُمْ وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ]

You will find another people who want to have security from you and security from their people. Whenever they are returned to fitnah, they fall back into it. Then if they do not let you be and extend peace to you and restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you overtake them. [91]

Commenting on this, ibn Kathir wrote:

[ وقال السدي : الفتنة هاهنا : الشرك . وحكى ابن جرير ، عن مجاهد : أنها نزلت في قوم من أهل مكة ، كانوا يأتون النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فيسلمون رياء ، ثم يرجعون إلى قريش فيرتكسون في الأوثان ، يبتغون بذلك أن يأمنوا هاهنا وهاهنا ، فأمر بقتالهم إن لم يعتزلوا ويصلحوا ; ولهذا قال تعالى : ( فإن لم يعتزلوكم ويلقوا إليكم السلم ويكفوا أيديهم ) أي : عن القتال ( فخذوهم واقتلوهم حيث ثقفتموهم ) أي : أين لقيتموهم . ]

al-Suddi said: the meaning of the word fitnah here is al-shirk.

Ibn Jarir relayed that Mujahid said that this ayah was revealed about some of the people of Makkah who came to the Prophet and embraced Islam just for show and then returned to the Quraysh and went right back to worshiping idols. Their goal in all of this was to be protected from both groups. So Allah commanded fighting them if they didn't let the Muslims be and make peace with them.

That is why Allah said, "Then if they do not let you be and extend peace to you and restrain their hands" i.e. from fighting "then seize them and kill them wherever you overtake them" i.e. wherever you find them.

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 2/375]

Allah says in surah 'Abasa [80]:

[قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ]

Man is qutila - how disbelieving he is! [17]

The word qutila is often explained and translated as "cursed".

In his tafsir of this ayah, Abu Ja'far al-Tabari wrote:

[ حدثني موسى بن عبد الرحمن المسروقي ، قال : ثنا عبد الحميد الحماني ، عن الأعمش ، عن مجاهد قال : ما كان في القرآن قتل الإنسان أو فعل بالإنسان ، فإنما عني به : الكافر . ]

Mujahid said: Whenever you see "man is qutila" or similar phrases in the Qur'an, then it is specifically referring to the disbelievers.

[Tafsir al-Tabari 24/222]

In surah al-Nisa', Allah says:

[اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ لَيَجْمَعَنَّكُمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۗ وَمَنْ أَصْدَقُ مِنَ اللَّهِ حَدِيثًا]

Allah, there is no deity worthy of worship but Him. He will surely gather you up on the Day of al-Qiyamah, about which there can be no doubt. And who truer in speech than Allah? [87]

In his tafsir, Imam al-Baghawi wrote:

[( إلى يوم القيامة ) وسميت القيامة قيامة لأن الناس يقومون من قبورهم ، قال الله تعالى : يوم يخرجون من الأجداث سراعا ( المعارج - 43 ) وقيل : لقيامهم إلى الحساب ، قال الله تعالى : " يوم يقوم الناس لرب العالمين " ، ( المطففين - 6 )]

al-Qiyamah has been named qiyamah - standing/resurrection - because the people will rise up from their graves. Allah has said:

[يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا]

"The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly" [al-Ma'arij 43]

And others have said that is is named that because they will stand for their reckoning. Allah said:

[يَوْمَ يَقُومُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ]

"The Day that mankind will stand before the Lord of all creation" [al-Mutaffifeen 6]

[Tafsir al-Baghawi 2/259]

Allah says in surah al-Baqarah:

[وَلِكُلٍّ وِجْهَةٌ هُوَ مُوَلِّيهَا ۖ فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَيْرَاتِ ۚ أَيْنَ مَا تَكُونُوا يَأْتِ بِكُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ]

Each one has a direction which he is facing, so hasten to good deeds. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Allah is able to do anything. [148]

Commenting on part of this ayah, Imam al-Sa'di wrote:

[والأمر بالاستباق إلى الخيرات قدر زائد على الأمر بفعل الخيرات، فإن الاستباق إليها، يتضمن فعلها وتكميلها وإيقاعها على أكمل الأحوال، والمبادرة إليها، ومن سبق في الدنيا إلى الخيرات فهو السابق في الآخرة إلى الجنات، فالسابقون أعلى الخلق درجة]

The command to "hasten" to good deeds is something above and beyond simply commanding them to do good deeds, for hastening to them includes doing them, doing them completely, doing them in the best way possible, and being quick to start them.

Whoever hastens to good deeds in this life will be among the first to enter the gardens in the hereafter, for the forerunners are the highest level of created beings.
