Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله reported:

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said to me:

“What can my enemies do to me? My paradise and my garden are in my heart wherever I go and they are never separated from me.

If I'm imprisoned, then it is seclusion for worship. If I'm killed, then it is martyrdom. If they expel me from my land, then it is tourism.”

How the Salaf feared Allāh

Umayyah al-Shamī (3rd generation who lived in Madinah) used to cry and weep in the masjid until his weeping became loud. The ruler of those regions sent him a letter saying: you are disturbing those who pray with your excessive crying and loud weeping so hold yourself back a little. When he read it he cried and aaid: The grief of the Day of Judgement has bequeathed me endless tears. I gain some relief by shedding some of them sometimes. [50]

Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه gave away all his wealth, not even sparing his garnment. 'Umar Ibn al-Khattāb رضي الله عنه wishes he was an inanimate shrub and 'Uthmān رضي الله عنه wished after his death never to be resurrected [out of fearing Allāh]. And 'Alī ibn Abī Tālib رضي الله عنه shouted at this worldly life, I divorce you thrice, therefore you are unlawful to me now forever, even though a single divorce would have sufficed. Abū ad-Dardā رضي الله عنه wished he were a fodder plant chewed by animals, and 'Imrān ibn al-Husayn رضي الله عنه wished he was reduced to ashes. [129]

Al-Fudayl used to cry constantly; to the extent that he used to weep even during his sleep, which used to wake up his family. And Ibn Adham and al-Sarī used to urinate blood because of their fear of Allāh. [177]

Mālik ibn Dinār had a black line running down his cheek from how much his eyes shed tears. [184]

Imām Ibn Rajab al-Hanbalī رحمه الله stated:

Some of the righteous people, would keep a piece of paper in their pocket and would open the paper, to look at it every hour and that which was written on the paper was:

“So be patient with your Lord’s decree, for you are truly under Our ˹watchful˺ Eyes.”
