1. The Vertical Slider

The audio mixer is an immediately recognizable interface, its squadron of vertical sliders with their textured thumb plate indicators ready for battle on an aluminium field. The vertical slide suffers none of the ergonomic issues of its sleepy brother and has an entirely different affordance. The vertical slide is pushed or pulled, inhaled and exhaled. For fine control over a medium to long range there is no better choice. No ancilliary coarse adjustment is required, you can simply wave it into place with the hand gesture of a bored Sultan directing a catemite. And for fine control you pinch it and raise it, pinky up, along with your eyebrow, like the queen taking a sip of tea.

For this reason the verticle slider should never be gradiated. This would stop you from throwing it into place. Use a dial instead where you wish to control the user, use a vertical slider where the user would be King.

Its digital counterpart is fine enough for coarse controls but should be paired with other elements for fine control.
