Cheap vintage SLR lens used on recent Dune 2 movie.

A Helios 44-2 lens, which came with the Zenit (Russian: Зени́т) SLR cameras, was made in the USSR from the late 1950s right through to the 1980s. It was actually based on the Carl Zeiss Biotar technology the, which the USSR took when they occupied East Germany.

As all lenses based on the Biotar formula, the Helios-44 and Helios-40 produce an unusual "swirly" bokeh effect to the out-of-focus background. The bokeh "circles" become more elliptical in shape as you move away from the center of the photo. This optical phenomenon gives images rendered by these vintage lenses a distinct character, which has created a cult following among fine art photographers.

The Zenit was one of the cheapest and most mass-produced film SLRs ever made. 12 million models were produced. Thus this is an affordable but still quite collectable lens.
