Akylbek Muratbay: Defender of the Karakalpak People

Today, July 16, is the birthday of Akylbek Muratbay, a Karakalpak activist who dedicated his life to protecting the rights of his people.   Akylbek Muratbay has lived in Kazakhstan for more than ten years and is known for his criticism of Tashkent’s policies and active defense of the rights of Karakalpak activists¹².

Early Years and Beginning of Activism

Akylbek Muratbay was born and raised in Uzbekistan, where he faced the difficulties and injustices his people encountered from an early age. After moving to Kazakhstan, he began actively participating in the life of the Karakalpak diaspora, helping labor migrants and organizing cultural events³.

Fight for Karakalpak Rights

Since 2013, Akylbek Muratbay has become a significant figure in the Karakalpak community in Kazakhstan. He drew attention to the persecution of the Karakalpak people in Uzbekistan and opposed violent confrontations¹. In 2022, after clashes in Nukus, his activism became even more prominent, and he began actively interacting with international media and human rights organizations².

Detention and Possible Extradition

In February 2024, Akylbek Muratbay was detained in Almaty at the request of Uzbekistan. Currently, the issue of his extradition is being considered, which has caused a wave of protests among human rights defenders and the international community¹². Muratbay is accused of producing and distributing materials that pose a threat to public safety, as well as encroaching on the constitutional order of Uzbekistan².

Legacy and Influence

Despite all the difficulties, Akylbek Muratbay continues to fight for the rights of his people. His activities inspire many and serve as an example of resilience and dedication to his cause. Today, we honor his contribution to defending the rights of the Karakalpak ethnic group and hope for a fair resolution of his case.
