*Internationally, ensuring road safety is a critical issue with numerous strategies suggested to mitigate accidents and improve overall safety. One such proposal is a mandatory annual driving test for vehicle drivers. Although I acknowledge that annual driving tests can potentially improve driver competency, their annuity is a huge financial burden, thus this solution is far from being the best one. Instead, there should be a multi-faceted approach, including raising awareness about road safety and better driver assistance systems within cars.

To start with, I do not neglect that yearly driving tests can considerably improve drivers in terms of their competence. Regular driving tests can assure that drivers remain updated on newly enacted traffic laws and maintain their driving practices well. In such a scenario, drivers may avoid the incidence of traffic violations and accidents that are caused by ignorance or outdated knowledge.

Nevertheless, these tests can have notable drawbacks one of which is its financial burden. Conducting yearly tests for millions of drivers can be financially exhausting – that is, require substantial quantity of resources, test centers, personnel and administrative costs. Not only do these strain public funds and lead to increased fare fees for drivers, but also cause economic hardship for low-income individuals within the society.

In my opinion, there should be a more multi-faceted approach. Apart from testing drivers, public awareness about road safety has to be enhanced. This can be performed in the form of different campaigns that highlight the importance of safe driving practices, the dangers of distracted driving and the need for constant vehicle maintenance. These alone can instil safe driving culture within drivers. In addition to this, vehicles must be modified with better driver assistance systems that may improve emergency braking, lane-keeping and control. These may reduce the number of human errors and lead to reduced number of accidents.

To conclude, I do not underestimate the importance of yearly driving tests since they are of great help in improving driver competency through updating on new traffic rules and encouraging better driving practices. However, I am far from the idea that it is the best way to improve road safety since it carries financial burden for governments. Instead, I believe, more campaigns on raising public awareness should be conducted and the vehicles have to come with better driver assistance systems to reduce the number of accidents, thus leading to a more improved safety.*
