Indigo research at BASF refers to the pioneering work done by the German chemical company Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik (BASF) to synthesize indigo, a natural blue dye that was highly valued in the 19th century. This effort was a landmark in the chemical industry, transforming dye production from a plant-based process to an industrial one. The key figure in BASF’s indigo research was Heinrich Caro, the company’s first head of research, who collaborated closely with chemist Adolf von Baeyer. Together, they achieved the first synthesis of indigo in 1878. However, Baeyer’s initial method wasn’t practical for large-scale production. It took nearly two decades of further research, with contributions from other scientists like Karl Heumann, before BASF successfully launched its synthetic "Indigo pure BASF" in 1897, revolutionizing the dye market and outpacing competitors.

Now, the Nazi connection comes into play later, indirectly through BASF’s history, not Baeyer himself. Baeyer died in 1917, well before the Nazi era, so he had no personal ties to them. However, BASF, along with other major German chemical firms like Bayer and Hoechst, merged in 1925 to form IG Farben, a massive conglomerate. During the Nazi regime, IG Farben became deeply entangled with the Third Reich. It exploited forced labor from concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and a subsidiary produced Zyklon B, the gas used in the Holocaust. After World War II, IG Farben was dismantled by the Allies, and BASF re-emerged as an independent company in 1952. While Baeyer’s indigo work predates this dark chapter, the company he partnered with, BASF, later became part of this troubling legacy.
