On the authority of Abu Hurayrah -may Allah be pleased with him- that The Prophet ﷺ said:

من دَعَا إِلَى هُدًى كَانَ لَهُ مِنَ الأَجْرِ مِثْلُ أُجُورِ مَنْ تَبِعَهُ لاَ يَنْقُصُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْئًا

“Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to those who follow him, without detracting from their rewards at all.”

Al\-Imam Ahmad \-may Allah have mercy on him\- reported: Narrated by Anas bin Malik that Mu'adh bin Jabal used to lead his people in the prayer.

A man called Hiram who was concerned with watering his date plants entered the masjid to pray with the people.

When he saw Mu'adh prolonging the prayer, he left him in the prayer and went to water his date palms.

Once Mu'adh completed his prayer, it was said to him:

“Hiram entered the masjid but when he saw you lengthening the prayer, he left it and went to water his date palms.”

Mu'adh said: “Verily he is a hypocrite that he should leave the prayer to water his date palms.”

So Hiram went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with Mu'adh and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I wanted to water my date palm trees. I entered the masjid to pray with the people but when the prayer was prolonged. I left the prayer, went to my date-palm trees and watered them, and Mu'adh thought I was a hypocrite for doing so.”

The Prophet ﷺ turned to Mu'adh and said:

“Are you a troublemaker? Are you a troublemaker? Do not prolong the prayer.Recite:

بسبح اسم ربك الأعلى، والشمس وضحاها

{Glorify the name of your Lord the Most High} [al\-A'la 87] or {By the Sun and its Brightness} [as\-Shams 91] and its like.”

`The hadith is Sahih according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.

It was reported by an-Nasa’i in his Tafsir 269.`

This narration is to teach Mu'adh a lesson and not a Jarh upon him.

I mentioned this Hadith to show the permissibility of the teacher to talk as such to his student if required.

He said: “Subhan Allah! Why would you not relay greetings to them?!”

And I said to Ahmad: “Is it permissible for us to speak with them?”

He said: “Yes! Except if they are callers to innovations and quarrel for its sake.”
