ANTARCTIC CIRCLE is an imaginary circle which runs parallel to the equator about 23,1/4 degrees north of the South Pole. It marks off the South Frigid Zone from the South Temperate Zone. For one day of each year, usually December 21, the whole area south of the Antarctic Circle has twenty-four hours of daylight. About June 21, the region has twenty-four hours of darkness. At the South Pole itself, daylight lasts from September 21 to March 21, and darkness from March 21 to September 21. Captain James Cook made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle on his voyage of 1773.

This phenomena of having daylight last when it's winter up north and darkness when it's summer up north can be easily explained in the geometric model.
