If you want to get a 7+, forget about Writing, and focus on Listening (and Reading). Most likely you won't get a good score for Writing, anyway.

Besides, it's much easier to up your Listening by a point or two. All you need to do is listen to (and watch) a lot of authentic English materials. And yes, do some practice tests as well.

When I took the CEFR test, Listening and Speaking were 55% of my total score, which is just two sections out of five.

This is unless you're Begzod aka, the founder of IELTS Zone, who's already maxed out on the other 3 sections. Otherwise why bother yourself writing mundane Task 1 reports when you can spend some lovely time watching your favorite soap opera?

"How can I improve my Writing?" is one of the most common questions I get asked. It's also one of these questions I always try to dodge.

You see, for me to give any sensible advice, I first need to see your writing. Apart from generic recommendations, such as "read more articles", there is NO one-size-fits-all approach to writing better essays.

Imagine a doctor prescribing medications without even looking at you. Different people will have different problems. For some, the problem is their grammar – they simply can't write without mistakes. Others have a problem with vocabulary.

But even here, not all problems are the same. I teach students whose English is actually pretty advanced. Most of the time, I have to curb them from using too sloppy structures (or vocabulary) They have an issue with the flow of the essay, despite having nice grammar and all.

Finally, there's a small share of IELTS candidates whose only problem is lack of information. They can't tell an Opinion/Discussion essay from an Opinion/Personal Viewpoint essay, for example. Teach them the right structures and they'll crack a 7+ hands down.

In any case, this is all just a prelude to my new Writing course which I'm planning to announce today. I'll follow up with the details later on.
