Jimma University Medical Center Successfully Conducts Vascular Surgery Workshop

Jimma University Medical Center, in collaboration with the global vascular companionship NGO, conducted a vascular surgery workshop from January 8 to 18, 2024. The workshop marked a significant milestone as the medical center treated 40 patients at the referral clinic, performing 11 successful operations.

The surgical procedures included 2 AVF creations, 2 AVF corrections, 1 endarterectomy, and 6 open varicose vein surgeries. Additionally, sclerotherapy was administered to 6 patients. This event marked the first-ever elective vascular surgery cases at Jimma University, showcasing the medical center's commitment to advancing surgical capabilities.

Looking ahead, the initiative plans to continue its impact by partnering in mentoring surgeons for future endeavors, further enhancing vascular surgery capabilities at Jimma University.

Enhancing the Health System at Jimma University Medical Center and Health Facilities in Jimma Zone

Project C.U.R.E., a renowned global health organization, collaborated with the Ethiopian diaspora abroad to enhance the health system in Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC) and health facilities in Jimma Zone. This expansive project collects medical equipment and supplies from the United States of America and distributes them to over 135 countries worldwide. In this fiscal year, the project has collaborated with the Ethiopian diaspora abroad to ship containers of supplies to hospitals in Jimma Zone and the Hararge region.

The initiative enabled representatives of Project C.U.R.E and the Ethiopian diaspora to conduct an onsite needs assessment and visit Jimma University and health facilities in Jimma Zone.

A warm welcome was extended at Jimma Abajifar Airport, underscoring the significance of international partnerships in advancing healthcare access.

During a session conducted at JUMC, distinguished guests, including Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, Dr. Jo Sullivan, Executive Director of Project C.U.R.E, Dr. Ahmed Zeynudin, Chief Executive Director of the Institute of Health, other top leadership of Jimma University, Mr. Fuad Sabit, Head of Jimma Zone Health Bureau, senior physicians, healthcare professionals, and other invited guests gathered for this impactful initiative.

In his opening speech, Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, extended a warm welcome to Project C.U.R.E. and the Ethiopian diaspora. He emphasized Jimma University's commitment to becoming an autonomous institution through international collaborations. He expressed gratitude to Project C.U.R.E. and the Ethiopian diaspora for their crucial role in enhancing medical equipment and supplies at both JUMC and health facilities in the Jimma Zone. This collaborative effort, involving various partners from both local and international spheres, is focused on advancing the university's intended area of excellence, particularly in healthcare.

Dr. Ahmed Zeynudin, Chief Executive Director of the Institute of Health, stated that the institute is committed to delivering quality healthcare services and is willing to continue working with local and international NGOs to ensure the quality of care to the community who needs the most. He extended appreciation to the diaspora community for their selfless contribution to enhance health system through donation of supplies and equipements and capacity building.

Mr. Fuad Sabit, the Head of Jimma Zone Health Bureau, delivered a keynote speech, stressing the pivotal role of this partnership in advancing the local health system.

Dr. Jo Sullivan, Executive director of Project C.U.R.E, highlighted its mission to address global medical resource shortages and its status as one of the world's largest distributors of donated medical supplies. The initiative aims to transform healthcare in Ethiopia by partnering with key stakeholders, academic institutions, and the Ministry of Health's M&E division.

The indispensable role of the diaspora in fundraising for essential medical equipment and supply was emphasized, with gratitude extended to them. Diaspora representative Dr. Obsa Hassen underscored how the diaspora is making many efforts to improve the lives of their community in Ethiopia and elaborated on shipment fundraising activities carried out by this far.
