Al-HAYAA (Shyness) part 2

The second type of hayaa is an admirable characteristic which shapes how one acts and interacts with others.

Hayaa is often frowned upon in some societies and mistaken for TIMIDNESS however there is a great difference between the two.
?️Hayaa is actually a praised characteristic which we as Muslims should aspire to obtain and maintain.
?️It is is so beloved to الله that He made the last Nabi -our finest example- a very shy man.
Daleel:
عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه قال:
 ((كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه و على آله وسلم أشدَّ حياءً مِن العَذْراء في خِدَرِها ...))
Translation
It is reported that Abu Saeed Al-Khudri رضي الله عنه said,
"Rasoolulaah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم was more shy that a virgin girl in her خِدْر (khidr)." Saheeh Muslim #5982 (1)
خِدْر
Ie. a section of a home screened by a curtain to make an area of privacy for the virgin girls in the household due to their shyness.
?️Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله تعالى said Hayaa has been defined as "هَيْبَة (Haibah) found in the heart" (end quote) (2)

This word هيبة means prestige, honour, esteem respect etc
So to have shyness (to be shy) is direct evidence of honour and prestige which exists within the heart of that person.
Due to this shy people generally;
?Have dignity
?Are respected by others due to their shyness
?Choose their words carefully
?Speak with wisdom
?Are humble
?Avoid shameful situations
?Have a good reputation
?Are reserved and composed

?All of this is protection from shameful, undignified, dishonorable speech and actions and the more prestige and dignity in the heart the more hayaa the person posesses.

(1) Sahih Muslim with the sharh of An-Nawawi
(2) Madaarig As-Salikeen, the chapter of Al-Hayaa

تكبيرات عشرة ذي الجحة

(The Takbeerat of The Ten Days of Thul Hijjah)

There is a Sunnah of the first ten days of Thul Hijjah which has become neglected by many in the West, which we can all revive seeking reward from الله تعالى.
It is the Sunnah of saying the Takbeerat in the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah
i.e to say the takbeerat of Eid in these 9 days and on Eid Al-Adhaa.
Daleel:
قوله تعلى
{وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَاتٍ}
Surah Al-Hajj:28
The meaning is we are to mention the name of الله in the ten days that are well known.

Ibn Abaas رضي الله عنه said this means to say the Takbeeraat in the first ten days (of Thul Hijjah) and as for the speech of الله,
{وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْدُودَاتٍ ۚ}
(Meaning mention Allah in the numbered days...)
Surah Al-Baqara:203
This is to say the Takbeerat in the days of Tashreek (i.e the three days following Eid Al-Adhaa, the 11th, 12th, and 13th)

Refer to the tafseer of Ibn Katheer of Al-Baqara: 203 and Al-Hajj: 28

The Sunnah of the Takbeerat of the first ten days are general and are to be said at any time during these days.
The takbeerat said on the 11th 12th and 13th are only to be said after each salah until Asr prayer on the 13th.

Lesson: SAHEEH AL-BUKHARI
Hadith #: 24
Chapter: SHYNESS IS A
BRANCH OF EMAN
(Part one)
Translation:

Imam Al-Bukhari, said,
Abdullah bin Yusuf informed him
by way of,
Malik bin Anas who told him that
Ibn Shihaab said,
Saalim bin Abdillah said,
His father said رضي الله عنه
"Rasoolulaah صلى الله عليه وسلم passed a man from the Ansaar who was lecturing his brother about his shy nature
So he صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him,
((Let him be, indeed shyness is from Eman))

Meaning of hadith:

Rasoolulaah صلى الله عليه وسلم heard a man advising his brother to change his shy nature because he saw it to be timidness or weakness ie a character flaw but Rasoolulaah صلى الله عليه وسلم
Explained that shyness is indeed a beautiful attribute to have due to it being a branch of Eman.

  1. Shyness comes from the admired actions within the heart.
  2. The Arabic word for shyness is Hayaa (حَياء)
  3. There are two types of حياء
(Hayaa) the best of them is to be shy infront of الله (the 2nd will follow in part 2 إن شاء الله )

Ie. we are shy to do something He تعالى dislikes and is not pleased with.
The person who has حياء of الله knows,
{ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا}
An-Nisaa:1
Meaning:
'Allah Observes and has Knowledge of all of our actions and situations'
(Tafseer Ibn Katheer).

  1. The one who has حياء of الله strives to worship Him doing extra deeds and abstaining from evil even when alone because he is SHY that his LORD will find him in disobedience of him.
    سبحان الله العظيم
We must take time to ponder upon that.

  2. Ibn Al-Qayyim and others describe this type of shyness as إحْسان (Ihsan) which is of the highest levels of Eman of الله تعالى.

6 Rasoolulaah صلى الله عليه وسلم defined إحْسان (Ihsan) as,
((To worship الله as if you see Him or at least to be aware that He sees you))
-Al-Bukhari & Muslim.

The person blessed with حياء of الله continues to obey الله in open, when alone and in secret due to his level of shyness of الله and إحسان.

  1. This is true عبودية (obodiyah) ie
Truly humbling one's self constantly being aware of their servitude to الله
That they are a slave of الله ...constantly.

?Not just at prayer time
?Not just when in the company of other Muslims
?Ones shyness of الله تعالى sets him apart from the rest of the believers because if he sins he is first and foremost shy from الله, self-conscious الله Knows of his action, and dislikes that his Lord would Find him doing or saying something disliked to Him تعالى

?Therefore having SHYNESS of الله acts as a huge expansive guard against shaytaan.?

Our sister Farzana Girwar from Trinidad حفظها الله wrote a poem about the importance of حياء for our lesson.

? بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم?

HAYAA

Do we ignore that voice within
Telling us that we should be ashamed to sin?
If so it is our Hayaa we reject,
A branch of Eemaan that we should protect,
But instead we exchange it for a hollow enjoyment
That leads us towards a painful torment.

Even if our sins from mankind we hide,
Burying knowledge of our wrongs deep inside,
Closing our own eyes to what is true,
Do you know what we cannot do?
Conceal the truth from our Lord
Or escape the day when to each soul is its reward.

But if we allow our Hayaa to do its duty,
We will realise very quickly its beauty.
An automatic safeguard against Allaah's displeasure,
The more knowledge we gain, the greater its measure.
When we hold fast to Eemaan and try to perfect it,
We hope from Allaah that He will accept it.

So let's spend our lives seeking Allaah's pleasure,
Recognising our Hayaa as a precious treasure,
Not deceiving ourselves as the foolish do,
But accepting Allaah's Speech as true,
That for the righteous is a great reward;
And hoping to see the Face of our Lord.
