Punishment for a White Man and a Black Woman Who Commited Fornication

Whereas Robert Sweat hath begotten with child a negro woman servant belonging unto Lieutenant Sheppard, the court hath therefore ordered that the said negro woman shall be whipt at the whipping post and the said Sweat shall tomorrow in the forenoon do public penance for his offence at James city church in the time of devine service according to the laws of England in that case provided

Hugh Davis to be soundly whipped, before an assembly of Negroes and others for abusing himself to the dishonor of God and shame of Christians, by defiling his body in lying with a negro; which fault he is to acknowledge next Sabbath day.

[Perhaps Hugh Davis received a whipping and had to acknowledge that he committed fornication with an African woman because the legislators believed that interracial fornication was more sinful. Compare Davis's punishment with that handed out to Robert Sweat in 1640.]

Today is Robert E Lee’s Birthday. Today we honor a man who was not only an extraordinary general but also an extraordinary man. He had profound courage and loved his country the southland deeply. May we always fondly remember him as a hero of the south.

Some facts about Lee

•Robert Edward Lee was born in Stratford Hall, a plantation in Virginia, on January 19, 1807, to a wealthy and socially prominent family. His mother, Anne Hill Carter, also grew up on a plantation and his father, Colonel Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, was descended from colonists and became a revolutionary war leader and three-term governor of Virginia.

•Lee went to the US Military academy at West Point for a military education. He graduated second in his class in 1829

•Lee and his wife had seven children, including three sons, George, William and Robert, who followed him into the military to fight for the Confederate States during the Civil War
