Push notifications are pop-up messages on your computer or smartphone. They are short text messages that provide important information such as discounts, promotions, successful completion of a transaction, or order status. However, they are not only used as alerts, but can also play a marketing role.

How push notifications work and for what purpose they are used, read here.

Varieties

Push notifications are divided into:

  • browser-based - appear at the bottom of the display on the right side;
  • mobile - appear at the top of the screen, often coming from apps.

Depending on the content, the mailing is divided into:

  1. Content - informs about promotions, novelties, news, allow attracting the audience at the expense of content.
  2. Triggered - fluffs are personalized, refer to a particular user. For example, if the user has made an order, the fluffs can notify about discounts, availability of the item.
  3. Transactional - can contain data about successful payment, authorization code, order status.

Where is push mailing stored?

Push notifications are stored in the phone memory. When swiping from the screen, they are not completely deleted. The full list can be found in the notification center, where all mailings are stored. You can also view them through third-party apps.

On PC, push notifications are categorized into system and browser-based notifications. All system push notifications can be viewed in the notification center. Third-party mailings from the browser are not stored, their demonstration can be allowed or disabled.

Difference between push and SMS

Push mailings and SMS messages can be effective marketing tools for notifying users. They are quite similar in their mechanism of operation, but there are a few key differences:

  • Push notifications are free, this cannot be said about SMS;
  • SMS can be sent only to mobile devices;
  • users have freedom of action, which helps to increase their loyalty; it is much easier to refuse from push notifications than from receiving SMS notifications;
  • however, SMS-alerts are sent even when the balance is zero or the internet is disconnected;
  • you can add not only text (as in SMS), but also photos, links and even buttons of the target action;
  • after receiving SMS messages do not completely disappear, they are stored in the memory of the device, access to them is much easier than to the mailing list.
